Kindergarten

Introduction

In kindergarten at Our Savior, students take another step forward in their education. This year, on Tuesdays and Thursdays, they attend for a full day and for a half day on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays.

They dip into the foundations of their academics with reading, writing and arithmetic and of course, they learn more about and experience the love of Jesus.

Yesterday the kindergartners went to the Wharton Center to see the Lansing Concert Band perform. It was a great introduction to musical instruments and the children enjoyed watching the musicians play their various instruments. As always, the bus ride there and back was just as much fun!

We are working hard at reading. During March each student is bringing to school a book that he or she can read to the class. It gives each one practice in word recognition as well as fluency.

Our trip to Abrams Planetarium was very interesting for not only the kindergartners but also for the first graders. Our visit on Tuesday was the first for some of the students, but for many it was a return trip. We learned about the night sky with many of the constellations we are likely to see. Of course, the bus ride getting there and back was a first for most of the students. They loved it!

We are starting our preparations for Christmas. We have read the book Advent is for Waiting by Donna R. Rathert and have talked about the significance of the Advent wreath. We made Advent wreaths and put them up in our classroom. We will "light " another candle each week until we take them home for Christmas.

In religion, we have learned about Zechariah who was told by the angel Gabriel that he would have a son who would prepare God's people for Jesus' coming. We made angel doorknob hangers to use at home to remind us of the angel's visit. By Christmas we will have talked about the angel who visited Mary, Jesus' birth, and the visit by the shepherds. After Christmas we will learn about the coming of the wise men. Ths will dovetail nicely with our visit to Abrams Planetarium in January.

During this busy time of year, don't forget that children need to maintain regular sleeping and healthy eating schedules. As their excitement levels build, so will their stress levels. For the good of the entire class, please help them to stay well rested and nourished!
