2nd Grade Assignments and News
May 5-9

* Next week we will continue our Stanford Achievement testing. We also will learn the last petition of The Lord’s Prayer.
*As for spelling, we have completed our primary reading text, therefore, there will be no more spelling tests. Each student received at least 50 challenge points during the course of the school year and will all be included in a Super-duper ice cream party on Friday, May 16 during the afternoon.
*May 16th our class is leading the school in chapel. Feel free to come and watch your child during chapel on that day.
*We are currently working with fractions in math. I have also introduced simple multiplication to the students because there are a few multiplication questions on the S.A.T.

Memory work for next Friday:

The Seventh Petition
But deliver us from evil. What does this mean? We pray in this petition, in summary, that our Father in heaven would rescue us from every evil of body and soul, possessions and reputation, and finally, when our last hour comes, give us a blessed end, and graciously take us from this valley of sorrows to Himself in heaven.

The entire class is still doing a terrific job on their memory. Thank you parents for working with your child to help them memorize such an important part of our Lutheran catechism.

Have a blessed weekend!

The Third Petition
Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven.
What does this mean?  The good and gracious will of God is done even without our prayer, but we pray in this petition that it may be done among us also.
How is God’s will done?  God’s will is done when He breaks and hinders every evil plan and purpose of the devil, the world, and our sinful nature, which do not want us to hallow God’s name or let His kingdom come; and when He strengthens and keeps us firm in His word and faith until we die.  This is His good and gracious will.

It was a terrific Lutheran schools week celebration this past week.  The second graders really embraced the theme for each day.  In fact, our class won the spirit award for having the greatest percentage of students participating throughout the week.
Some fun activities this week included all-school devotions each morning, an ice cream social, a sock hop, family feud, and a trip to the YMCA for swimming.

Lutheran Schools Week Assignments & News

March 3rd, 2008

2nd Grade Assignments & News
March 3-7

Dear Parents,

During Lutheran schools week I have decided to eliminate the spelling and memory work for the week.  We will, however, have a science quiz on Tuesday.  The quiz will be on Unit B, chapter 3 (pages b42 – b60 Force, Magnets, and Electricity).  The students should have a vocabulary sheet with all of the important terms on it.  This should be in their yellow folder.  Please help your child review for the quiz by asking him or her the questions on page b60.

Since there is a theme for each day next week please try to send your child to school with clothing that reflects that era.  The class that displays the highest level of participation in this area will receive an award at the end of the week.  Let’s hope the 2nd grade can be the winning classroom!

This past week the class learned about some of Jesus’ miracles, more two-digit subtraction, electricity, reptiles, amphibians, finding the main idea in a story or paragraph, finding details in a story or paragraph, and more.

We also learned how to write a few more upper case cursive letters (H, K, N, M, U, V, W, Y).

Thanks for the privilege of teaching your children,

Dave Wright

Athletic Director - I kind of like the sound of that.

February 24th, 2008

The past couple of weeks have been very busy and hectic, but also very enjoyable me. The reason is because of the new duties I have assumed as the A.D. This is a position that I have found to be challenging, fun, and rewarding.
We hosted a 5th and 6th grade boys basketball tournament a week ago and a 7th and 8th grade tournament this past weekend. The experiences were both very successful - not necessarily financially(although we did meet all our expenses) - because of the parental support and volunteer effort that took place. When there was a task that needed to be completed or a job to be filled - people stepped up and helped. Some of those people didn’t even have a son playing or a daughter cheerleading - they just wanted to be around the tournament atmosphere and serve in any way possible. Thank you everyone! I will not try to name everyone because I’m certain I will forget someone, but those of you that set up, served at the concessions and admissions tables, score table, and helped clean up afterward - your time and effort are very much appreciated. Thank you also to the coaches who spend hours tirelessly teaching and mentoring young, impressionable minds.
It is a privilege to serve as the coordinator of athletics here at Our Savior because parents, staff, and students seem to have athletics in the proper perspective. It is also a privilege because I truly enjoy trying to make athletics a positive experience for all invloved.

During the past several weeks I have sought and received advice from past athletic directors, coaches, parents, principals, and even staff members from other schools. Please be patient as I continue to sort out the ideas that we will use and disregard ideas that don’t fit our program at this time. There is also an athletic committee that meets regularly with me to help determine the best course of action involving athletic policy at Our Savior.

Yes, the job takes thought, time, and effort, but the partnership between the school and homes along with my passion for christian education and sports makes me sit back and think aloud, “Athletic director - I kind of like the sound of that.”

The second petition

Thy kingdom come. What does this mean?
The kingdom of God certainly comes by itself without our prayer, but we pray in this petition that it may come to us also.
How does God’s kingdom come? God’s kingdom comes when our heavenly Father gives us His Holy Spirit, so that by His grace we believe His holy word and lead godly lives here in time and there in eternity.

***Class News***

We have slowed down a little in math this week. The reason is because we are learning to subtract when there is regrouping (borrowing) involved. The kids are focused and eager during some of these long math days.

The first petition was a long one, but several students managed to recite it with relative ease on Friday. Way to go parents for working with your child to help them memorize an important part of their Lutheran doctrine.

Science continued with a couple of experiments having to do with magnetic attraction. These 2nd graders really do a fine job of participating appropriately when we roam the classroom in search of objects to test or experiment with.

Much of our time in religion this week centered on the parable of the good shepherd. I stressed to the class what an awesome thing Jesus did for us by being our good shepherd. The students should be certain that even if they were the only person on earth, Jesus still would have purchased and won their lost souls.

Blessings on your worship this weekend.

*** Class News ***

It has been a busy past couple of weeks.  The class is learning how to write cursive and up to this point they have learned 16 letters.  We have been practicing a lot during class time and I hope that very soon all written work will be done in cursive.

Pennies, nickels, and dimes, oh my!  The class has been counting coins and learning the values of all our coins.  This is an area that they need much practice in.  Perhaps after they learn more 2-digit addition and subtraction they will be more comfortable adding coins and being able to make change.

In Social Studies (geography) we are looking at various landforms as well as studying the states and learning a few details about some of our states.  Ask your child about the state that they did a report about.

There is a landform project for social studies that I am assigning as homework.  It will probably involve parent participation.  What I am assigning is a three dimensional display (diorama) of all eight landforms we have studied.  They include: plains, peninsulas, lakes, islands, rivers, mountains, hills, and valleys.  The display can be done in a shoebox and can include any type of materials such as clay, play-dough, cotton, yarn, wood, fabric, paint, markers, or anything that can be used to create a little landform display.  The top and front walls of the box should be taken off so as to gain a better view of the project. Also each landform must be labeled as well as the entire diorama.  For example, mine is called Daveland.

The project will be due on February 1st. For ideas or examples feel free to stop by the classroom where Daveland is on display and I will be happy to explain it in more detail.

Have a great weekend,

Dave Wright

Practices for the Christmas program are in full swing.  We are spending about 45 minutes on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday practicing.

This week in religion the students learned about true friendship.  The story of David and Jonathan illustrated what it means to place the Lord in the midst of a friendship and then treat one another according to His guidelines.

In math the class took a quiz on chapter 4, continued working on Rocket facts, practiced estimating, added in groups of ten and played Quizmo – lots of fun!

Language arts included work in research and writing about a festival that we would like to have.  Each student is creating their own dream festival – complete with all the fun that any festival might include.  We also worked with adjectives that compare, verb and noun agreement in sentences, noun recognition review, spelling activities and some handwriting.

Science this week began with a look at sound.  We experimented with pitch and vibration as we learned about sound waves.  The students should know that there is a difference between volume and pitch.

* The class is doing a terrific job of finishing assignments, getting parent signatures and being good classmates to one another.
* Remember that next Wednesday, December 5 you are invited to come and help decorate our Christmas tree immediately following the advent service that night.  It will be great fun.  Hope to see you all there.

Blessings on your weekend.
